These directions were issued by the Caretaker Prime Minister Justice (retired) Nasirul Mulk on Thursday as he visited the National Institute for Health (NIH).
During his visit, the interim premier chaired a briefing about the institute, its role in national health care, working and future plans. Health Minister Professor Yusuf Shaikh and the health secretary were also present on the occasion.
The prime minister said that the NIH had a vast potential which needs to be further enhanced to serve as country's first-ever public health department, with its own indigenous vaccine manufacturing and in-house research and development facilities.
He also appreciated the initiative taken by the NIH to draft the country's first public health law and asked the health ministry to expedite the process so as to allow the next government to move ahead with the necessary legislation.
Justice (retd) Mulk said that the institute was playing a commendable role towards providing quality health services to the people of the country and lauded the "great service" being rendered by the NIH.
He further added that the role of NIH was commendable not only because it was a health service provider, but also for being a key player in the treatment and prevention of disease.
Moreover, he said it was also important that the public is made aware of the services being provided at the institute.
