KARACHI: Reports emerged on Saturday, suggesting that Sindh Governor Mohammad Zubair resigned after a section of the media, including Radio Pakistan, ran the story that he tendered his resignation to President Mamnoon Hussain.

These reports also suggested that the governor decided to quit his post following PML N’s defeat in the general elections.

The spokesperson for the Governor House, however, rebutted all such media reports.

He said: “The governor has not yet tendered his resignation. This is just media hype.”

But other sources in the Governor House told The Express Tribune that the incumbent governor would ultimately have to leave his office as PTI brought in its own nominee on this post, but this process had not yet been initiated.

“Once Imran Khan is sworn into office and forms the new government … it can decide about the fate of the governor,” a senior PTI leader said, adding that Imran Khan would consult with senior party leaders about the best choice.

“We will not bring in a political activist as the new governor,” he said, adding that a neutral and apolitical person would be appointed on this post.

Meanwhile, other reports suggested that the incumbent governor decided to quit in protest against what he termed election rigging in Punjab and the  speaker of the Sindh Assembly would be looking after this office till the appointment of a new governor.

But the spokesperson for the Governor House also rejected the authenticity of these media reports, terming them mere speculations.

Mohammad Zubair, former chairman of the Privation Commission during the past PML N government, was appointed as the governor in January last year after the death of his predecessor, Justice (retd) Saeeduz Zaman Siddiqui.
