Tight security arrangements put in place at all of Islamabad's 786 polling stations

ISLAMABAD: Polling was held under tight security in the capital as police reported no major incident from any part of the district on Wednesday.

Tight security arrangements were put in place at all of the capital’s 786 polling stations with deployment of over 10,000 security personnel including 7,000 from police and Frontier Corps and another 3,000 from Pakistan Army and Rangers.



The capital has registered voters of 765,348 out of the total population of over two million. The election commission had declared 26 polling stations highly sensitive and another 87 were marked as sensitive for security reasons. However, police said no major incident was reported from the capital till evening.

Police also provided security to foreign election observers who were on the move throughout the day while traffic police officials were also deputed at most of the polling stations to regulate traffic and parking.



Policewomen were also deputed at each polling station to search women voters. Police did not allow anybody to carry mobile phones inside the polling stations.

Caretaker Interior Minister Azam Khan, secretary interior, chief commissioner and the IG Islamabad also visited a few polling stations in the city to review security arrangements.
