MIRANSHAH: Militants fired a mortar bomb at a military check post in the North Waziristan region on Thursday but there were no casualties, intelligence officials said. The attack happened near Miranshah.

"It missed the post and we have no reports of any casualties," an intelligence official in the region said.

Express 24/7 correspondent, Iftikhar Firdous reported that the military check post was located near Miranshah Stadium.

The main market in the town closed down and security forces fired shots in the air after the attack, residents said.

Pakistan has seen a surge in violence since al Qaeda chief Osama bin Laden was killed in a US raid in Abbottabad on May 2.

A suicide car bomber killed five policemen and a soldier in an attack on a police station in Peshawar on Wednesday.

Early this week, Taliban assaulted a heavily guarded naval base in Karachi that killed 10 military personnel and destroyed two aircraft.
