Hero, a donkey recently attacked by political activists has died, animal rescue organisation Ayesha Chundrigar Foundation (ACF) said on Monday.

The ACF had taken the animal in after receiving a call from a man who found the severely-injured donkey in Karachi’s Gulshan-e-Iqbal area. The donkey was also bleeding profusely.

The incident reportedly transpired after Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaaf (PTI) chairman Imran Khan termed those supporting the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) "donkeys".

The ACF had been regularly posting updates on the animal’s condition. “His internal injuries due to the violence he faced, were too much for him to bear,” an ACF statement read.

The organisation described the animal when he was first discovered as, “beaten to a pulp, punched in the face and abdomen several times, nose broken, kicked all over..." The donkey's body was covered in rope marks and a vehicle had also rammed into him.

Animals are routinely abused in the run-up to general elections in Pakistan. Earlier, a video featuring a dog 'boasting' PTI paraphernalia went viral.
