Legal framework to solidify women empowerment stressed

Jibran Nasir, activist and independent candidate, terms an infrastructure to support women as the need of the hour

KARACHI: As the clock ticks to general polls, candidates aspire to familiarise constituents with their manifestos through campaign events.

For Karachi's Jibran Nasir, independent candidate for NA-247 and PS-111 constituencies, creating an infrastructure to back women empowerment is the need of the hour.

Speaking at a corner meeting, Nasir laid out policies in respect to women's rights and empowerment. The lawyer stressed on the need for legal reforms to deal with the social and cultural issues deeply rooted in the society.



From gender equality to sensitisation – Nasir pushed for a legal framework that covers violence, directed at women, to safe public transport.

The independent candidate stressed discussion to address tabooed topics such as rape, domestic abuse and sexual harassment to attain basic rights for women.



“There should be more women in higher judiciary,” he told an audience of about 70 people, when asked about issues pertaining to legal discourse against sexual violence.

Contesting as an independent candidate, Nasir said he would be a part of any coalition but added that he will remain in the opposition. “No matter who sits in the government, I will always play the role of a guard.”
