Ptv Bias: Registrar’s objection overruled
Advocate Chaudhry alleged that PTV did not telecast the opposition leader Chaudhry Nisar’s speech.
LAHORE:
The chief justice (CJ) of the Lahore High Court (LHC) on Wednesday overruled an objection by the registrar’s office on a petition seeking directions to the Pakistan Television Corporation (PTV) to telecast speeches of Opposition Leader Chaudhry Nisar in the National Assembly. The office had objected that the petitioner should move the Islamabad High Court (IHC) as the LHC lacked territorial jurisdiction in the matter. The counsel for the petitioner, Advocate Waqar Ahmad Chaudhry, however, argued that the IHC and LHC enjoy concurrent jurisdiction and the court could hear the petition. The CJ took up the petition as an objection case and agreed with the petitioner. Advocate Chaudhry has alleged that PTV preferred the members from the treasury bench in the coverage of Parliament’s proceedings and did not telecast the opposition leader’s speech. He said that this policy was in violation of Article 19-A of the Constitution, which guarantees access to information for all. He requested that the secretary information and PTV managing director be directed to ensure impartial coverage of the Parliament’s sessions.
