Sanju has undoubtedly become one of Bollywood's biggest blockbusters ever, exceeding all expectations and breaking countless records at the box office. Many have labelled the Sanjay Dutt biopic as Ranbir Kapoor's best film to date.

But having said that, critics have also accused the film of trying to 'whitewash Dutt's reputation', reported The Indian Express. Director Rajkumar Hirani has been blamed for portraying a more favourable image of the Rocky star in Sanju than was perhaps needed.

Dutt hasn't held back though himself though and has spoken out in support of his film-maker friend. The Munna Bhai MBBS actor questioned why people think anyone would spend so much money just to glorify him. “I don’t think anyone would spend INR300-400 million to change one's image. That is too much of an amount," said the superstar. "I have told the truth and the truth has been accepted by India, and the box office collection shows that.”

Dutt also stated how hard it was for him to relive those tough times through Sanju. “It was difficult; I was trying to hold back my emotions in the theatre. It is difficult to relive your life. After the film ended, I just broke down. I just couldn’t believe it. Ranbir was much, much better than the real Sanju.”

One scene from the film which also became a topic of discussion was when the protagonist reveals the number of women he has slept with. Referring to that, Dutt stated, “I just felt that the count must be 308. I haven’t kept count that way. I bet Ranbir Kapoor’s count must be more than 10.”
