KARACHI:

Bulging biceps and popping veins define Amir Rahim, who will become the first Pakistani to compete in the Mr Universe Bodybuilding Championship to be held next month.

Apart from the extensive workout, Rahim is also fighting his way through financial constraints as he prepares for the global competition taking place in the US.

Hailing from Loralai, a small district in Balochistan, Rahim grabbed the spotlight when he was invited by the US Sports Network for the World Bodybuilding Championship last year. The participation was made possible by the City District Government Karachi, which bore the expenses of his trip and Rahim lived upto expectations after finishing an impressive seventh.

However, Amir is now targeting nothing less than the crown as he flexes his muscles for this year’s event.

“I’m confident of winning the title,” Amir told The Express Tribune. “I’ve worked hard and am looking forward to the competition.”

The two-day event starts on June 18 in Florida where Amir will appear in the heavyweight category.

Financial constraint

Amir earns his livelihood by training youngsters at a gym in Karachi but financial constraints have hampered his preparation and forced him to ask the government for assistance.

“I’m not receiving any support from the government this time despite producing good results in the World Championship. It’s an expensive sport and I need the motivation to do well. My friends are the ones supporting me for the trip.”
