Teachers demand dues for exam duties

Thousands not paid even after three months

LAHORE: Schoolteachers demanded the payment of their dues for examination duties. They asserted that the amounts should be cleared and asked the interim chief minister to take note of the situation.

In a statement issued on Thursday, Punjab Teachers' Union (PTU) said thousands of teachers had not been paid their dues even after three months.

The statement said the Punjab Examination Commission (PEC) was yet to release the remuneration for their examination duties as invigilators and paper markers.

Apart from this, the statement continued the PEC had yet to pay those who checked the papers in the 2016-17 examinations. "They owe around Rs6.8 million in compensation for teachers," the statement claimed.



PTU said that because of this delay, teachers were left in a fix. The statement further read that the examination cluster in charges claimed they were yet to receive the money by PEC to pay the remunerations of teachers. Meanwhile, the Punjab School Education Department (SED) Secretary Dr Allah Bakhsh Malik also took note and ordered PEC to pay the teachers their dues. However, they said the dues were still to be cleared by PEC.

“We demand that Caretaker Chief Minister Dr Hasan Askari Rizvi take note of PEC’s workings. An audit should be conducted on the millions of rupees of internal and external funds of the commission.

It lacks the money to pay position-holding students, but can hire consultants at hefty rates," the PTU pointed out.

It said payments of the remuneration of teachers should be made as soon as possible otherwise the PTU would besiege the PEC office.
