Special centres set up to issue CNICs to transgender persons

LAHORE: Social Welfare Department has expedited the process of issuing computerised national identity cards (CNICs) to transgender persons, while 530 more have also been registered.

The special centres, set up in the district on the orders of the Punjab chief secretary, were operational and issuing CNICs to the transgender persons.

So far, 1,471 CNICs had been issued. The spokesperson for the department shared with Express News that following the Supreme Court’s order, a monitoring committee was formed on the provincial level while an implementation committee in the district has also been set up.

The provincial monitoring committee reviews the performance of the implementation committee on a daily basis.

Special directives to speed up the registration process of the transgender persons have been issued to the deputy commissioners.
