Saudi singer celebrates end of driving ban on females with song

25-year-old Tamtam said she was inspired when she heard about the kingdom's decision

Women in Saudi Arabia have long waited to drive in the kingdom. Today marks the first day that females will be seen behind the wheel driving themselves around the cities. To celebrate the end of this ban and support female driving, Saudi singer Tamtam has released a song titled Drive.

According to Gulf News, the Los Angeles-based singer was over the moon when she heard of Saudi Arabia's decision to let women drive legally, starting June 24.



Tamtam learnt to drive at the age of 18 while she was studying economics at the University of California, San Diego. Speaking of her latest track, she said, "Drive is inspired by Saudi women now having a bigger voice. It is about realising how strong we are and never ever losing hope."

The four-minute long video features Tamtam cruising around the Orange Country with her friends in a vintage yellow Mustang convertible - like quintessential California girls.

The 25-year-old said that it took her 30 minutes to write the lyrics to the song and tune because she felt inspired. It's been well received by music lovers, especially Saudi women.

Excited over the end of the ban, Tamtam said, “I’m so happy the time has come. I’m proud of my country for lifting the ban and for showing us that it’s our time now. I’m also so proud of the women in my country for being brave, for knowing how strong we are and for constantly having the drive that keeps pushing us forward to make positive change."
