According to India Today, currency totalling Rs3.1 million was deposited inside the ATM in Assam's Tinsukia Laipuli area by a private security company on May 19, after which the machine had gone out of service on May 20.
Subsequently, on June 11, the company had re-opened the ATM only to realise that the whole sum of Rs1.3 million had been shredded to pieces by mice.

Most notes were in the denomination of Rs500 and Rs2,000.
The heap of money is believed to have been shredded by mice that managed to enter the machine.
A case has been lodged with local police and an investigation into the matter is underway.
