KARACHI: As many as 19,356 members of police force will provide security to taraweeh prayers in the city during the last 10 days of Ramazan.

This was stated at a meeting on Tuesday, in which Inspector-General of Police Allah Dino Khowaja reviewed strategy prepared by the Karachi police for the third Ashura of Ramazan, including Youm-e-Ali and congregations for Shab-e-Qadr. The police was on high alert in the city amidst the threats of terrorism and crimes during Ramazan, the meeting was informed.

Issuing directives to the police, the IG said the pattern for snap checking needed to be changed and the police should conduct joint snap checking at all points along with the Rangers.

Extraordinary deployment of police should be made at mosques and imambargahs ahead of Youm-e-Ali and Youm-e-Quds and strict security should be ensured, IG Khowaja said.

The police chief also directed all the districts SSPs to ensure their presence at markets and shopping hubs until their closure timings. He also asked the SSPs to work in close coordination with the representative organisations or unions of the markets.

The IG also issued directives to install revolving lights at all the police reporting centres at the markets to make people aware of their presence.

The police should take extraordinary measures to curb street crimes and a speedy crackdown should be initiated against those who were organising and supporting crimes, IG Khowaja said.

According to a report prepared by the Karachi police, 19,356 police officials and personnel would perform security duties at taraweeh prayers during the last 10 days of Ramazan and 3,154 cops would perform security duties at shopping centres. As many as 750 police mobile vans and 823 motorcycles would conduct snap checking and patrolling.
