PTI to 'dharna' in Karachi's streets

"We'll be protesting against the drone strikes till our people are truly liberated from the clutches of monsters".

KARACHI: PTI chairman and former cricketer Imran Khan said Friday his party workers would block the port in Karachi protesting  against US drone strikes in the country's tribal areas.

Karachi is Pakistan's economic hub, home to its stock exchange and major industries. The port city is important to logistical support for the NATO forces fighting against Taliban militants in Afghanistan.

Khan said "We'll sit outside the port's gate from Saturday afternoon to Sunday evening continuously to block the trucks carrying NATO supplies. It will be our symbolic protest against the US atrocities towards our innocent citizens."

He had equally harsh words for President Asif Zardari's government and the main opposition leader Nawaz Sharif but refrained from passing similar comments about army chief Ashfaq Kayani.

Khan said the government had given full liberty to its "American masters to kill Pakistanis at will."

"We'll be protesting against the drone strikes till our people are truly liberated from the clutches of monsters," he said.

Earlier, Khan's party had staged a two-day sit-in outside the northwestern city of Peshawar last month,  which was called to urge the US to end a covert missile campaign against Islamist militants in Pakistan's tribal belt.

NATO supply trucks and oil tankers have been targeted by insurgents in the past, attempting to disrupt supplies for the more than 130,000 international troops fighting in Afghanistan.

Most supplies and equipment required by coalition troops in Afghanistan are shipped through Pakistan, although US troops increasingly use alternative routes through central Asia.

Abbas | 12 years ago | Reply I wish Imran Khan all the best...i hate when seemingly educated people like badar alam who wrote in Dawn against Imran Khan. I ask him what all the catchy slogans of previous or currents politicians have given Pakistan and Pakistanis up till now except for shame humiliation and poverty? I know ppl are sick and tired of these fraudulent so called shrewd politicians whom badar alam is so en amour with and ppl are wise enough to know that this man has all the potentials of a brave and charismatic leader that people of Pakistan are yearning to have...IK does not talk in a language of slogans and above all does not spin ...he thinks clearly and educates ppl in a clear and pragmatic way and lays outs facts in front of ppl so that every one is able to understand what are the causes and affects our wrong decisions have brought about where as the dawn author badar alam and the likes of him admire politicians who give hindi/paki formula films kind of speeches"roti kapra aur makan" jaag pinjabi jaag teri mouch wich lag gy aag" etc. wake up pakistanion and vote Imran Khan!
