PakWheels.com has been at the forefront of conducting automobile industry surveys for many years now; gathering insights on consumers’, their behaviour, thought process of different brands and helping the auto sector predict future trends.

In 2017, PakWheels.com conducted the automobile industry survey in collaboration with Lahore University of Management Sciences. A total of 19,155 of responses were recorded from all over the country making it one of the most significant surveys of its nature.

The survey at large has been divided into two main parts. In the first part, the car users were asked various questions regarding their buying preferences, opinion about the cars they own, the brands they prefer and the factors that were important to them while buying a car etc. In the second part, the same questions were presented to bike users.

According to the survey, 35% of the local market is dominated by Toyota, 28% by Suzuki, 27% by Honda, while 11% is made up by other automotive brands. If we compare the data with the preceding survey the difference is quite surprising. Previously, Suzuki was leading with 33% market share, followed by Toyota with 31% share, Honda by 25% while other brands took up 11% of the market share.

As far as the bike market is concerned, it is heavily dominated by Honda with a whopping market share of 56%. Yamaha with a 7% share, Suzuki with a 6% slice, Road Prince with 3% cut leaves 28% of the market to other brands.

As per the survey, 74% of the respondents said that they hold a driving license while 19% said they don’t; 5% claimed that their license had expired and 2% asserted they had lost it. A whopping 60% of the respondents aged less than 21 years do not hold a driver’s license.

Additionally, 58% of the participants said that they bought a used car, while 38% declared that they bought a brand-new car. Moreover, 63% bike users/owners said they had bought a new bike, whereas 33% acknowledged that they had bought a used bike.

Out of the total pool, 75% individuals professed they had spent under PKR2 million on buying the car. A comparison of the 2017 auto survey with its preceding survey gives us some encouraging insights.

In the earlier survey 81% of the sample opted to buy cars under PKR2 million. 82% of the bike owners/users admitted they had spent under PKR 100,000 to buy the bike. The survey also divulged that the booming 70cc bike segment is dominating the market currently.

Both the car and bike users listed performance and safety features of the car as a top priority while purchasing the vehicle. It is heartening to note that car owners rated safety features at the bottom in the previous survey.

Furthermore, 20% of the latest survey pool said that they bought the car through car financing, whereas 28% said that they have car insurance. Formerly, only 25% of respondents possessed car insurance. Hence, more and more people are opting for car insurance.

After compiling the responses, various automobile companies have been crowned winners in their respective categories which include motor oils, insurance companies, car tracking companies, tyre companies, battery companies and radio channels etc.
