KARACHI: Police claimed on Wednesday to have shot dead a suspect who allegedly killed a policeman and wounded a police station chief in the Clifton neighbourhood around a week ago.

According to police officials, an encounter took place between suspects and the police near Darakshan Villas within the limits of the Darakhshan police station. During the exchange of fire, a suspect was critically injured while another managed to flee, said a head constable, Mudassir, who was also injured during the encounter.

Sharing details of the incident, South SSP Sarfaraz Nawaz said a man, Ayaz, was robbed of his cash and mobile phone by muggers. Soon after this, he saw a patrolling police team, to which he complained about the mugging. The police managed to track down the muggers, which lead to the encounter.

The injured suspect succumbed to his injuries, said SSP Nawaz. He was later identified by Clifton SHO Chaudhry Shahid as the same criminal who was involved in the encounter on May 21 in which a head constable, Hidayatullah, was martyred and the SHO himself was injured.

The body was shifted to the Edhi morgue in Sohrab Goth after medico-legal formalities were completed at Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre.

The police also claimed to have recovered robbed items, a pistol and motorcycle from the deceased suspect. A case has been registered, while further investigations are under way.
