LAHORE: Taking notice of student’s protests against the principal’s alleged misbehaviour, the University of Education (UoE) administration constituted a two-member committee to look into the matter.

The committee was constituted on the orders of UoE Vice Chancellor Dr Rauf-i-Azam, revealed a statement issued on Wednesday. The committee has been tasked to look into the matters and issues related to UoE Bank Road Campus; the committee will submit its recommendations to the VC within a few days, it added.

The two-member committee consists of Dr Muhammad Arshad and Dr Muhammad Alam Saleem, the statement detailed.

This is a different stance the varsity has taken on the issue. Previously, the administration maintained that several teachers were inciting students, urging them on a defamatory campaign against the Principal Shagufta Andleeb. UoE Spokesperson Shehryar Ahmed stated that some teachers and students disliked the fact that the principal tried to ensure discipline on campus. He alleged some teachers were inciting students against the principal.

On Monday, students from UoE Bank Road Campus, protested against the alleged “unacceptable behaviour” of Andleeb. Students claimed that the principal used abusive language while disciplining pupils. They demanded swift and immediate action be taken against her.

Earlier, more than 100 students lodged a complaint with Punjab Governor Rafiq Rajwana about the principal’s behaviour. The students collected signatures, claiming Andleeb used foul language to abuse them in the name of discipline. The letter to the governor was signed by 119 students, but was given no heed.

Andleeb was appointed principal of UoE in May last year. Her appointment was one riddled with controversy; several teachers claimed she was given the position against the rules over other senior faculty members.
