Karachi to experience three-day heatwave from Tuesday

Temperature may rise up to 45°C, people advised to take precautionary measures

KARACHI: Mercury can surge today up to as high as 45° Celsius in Karachi. The city is also likely to remain under the influence of gusts of hot winds that are expected to persist for three days.

According to the Pakistan Meteorological Department, a low air pressure in Sindh's upper region would affect the weather of the port city as it could halt or inhibit the sea breeze for three days due to which the city would experience hot winds blowing from the north-western areas, instead of south-western winds.

Due to the absence of sea breeze, residents of Karachi will experience a heatwave and temperatures in the city will remain unusually high from today till May 31.



The Met office also issued an alert on Sunday regarding the incoming heat wave. The office will also be monitoring the heatwave.

According to the alert, the temperature on Tuesday can rise up to 45°C. However, in the following two days of the heatwave, it will slightly drop and will remain between 40 and 42°C.

According to the Met office director, Abdul Rasheed, the temperature will normalise after May 31. He opined that recurrence of heatwave in Karachi was due to the climate change.



Hundreds of people died in Karachi during the heatwave of 2015. The government and private organisations have set up relief camps across the city to treat people who are affected by heatstroke. Doctors have also advised the residents to stay indoors when the mercury level is high.
