ISLAMABAD: Allama Iqbal Open University (AIOU) has planned to launch degree programmes at master, M Phil and PhD levels on Seeratun Nabi or the life of the Holy Prophet (PBUH) soon.

The outlines of the courses have already been prepared and the AIOU Academic Council has approved it, Vice Chancellor Dr Shahid Siddiqui said on Thursday.

In a message on the advent of Ramazan, he also announced that the university will arrange competition for writing books on Seeratun Nabi on annual basis and the best book will be awarded special prize.

The university has recently won five national awards on promotion of Seeratun Nabi through its research-based academic work. It was for first time that the AIOU was declared the best one among the higher educational institutions on writing research journal and articles by the Federal Ministry of Religious Affairs with five awards.

A separate department on Seerat-un-Nabi has been set up to exclusively work on the teaching of Holy Prophet (PBUH). According to Seerat Studies Department Chairman Dr Moinnuddin Hashmi the annual enrolment in this discipline at BA-level has reached around 70,000.

This is the something unprecedented in the history of AIOU. The teaching of Seeratun Nabi is going on successfully at the Matric and FA levels.

The university has decided to hold third international Seerat conference in October next.

VC Siddiqui said the university has also planned to publish an encyclopaedia on Seerat-un-Nabi.

A series of 'Khutbat-e-Islamabad' or sermons of Islamabad has also been launched by the Department of Islamic Thoughts, Culture and History, through which special talks are regularly arranged on the contemporary issues in light of Quran and Sunnah.

The future plan to expand the academic work on Seeratun Nabi also includes setting up Seerat Centre and a special library. It has also been decided to prepare a short-course on the subject for the university's employees.
