Application seeks to shift Anwar to jail

A plea objecting to converting the house of former SSP Rao Anwar, prime accused in the fake encounter of Naqeebullah Mehsud, to a sub-jail was submitted in an anti-terrorism court (ATC) on Thursday, Express News reported.

The written objection highlights that an ATC had given physical remand of Anwar to the Sindh Police after appearing before a Supreme Court (SC) bench headed by Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP) Mian Saqib Nisar in March. After the end of physical remand on May 2, the former police officer was sent to jail.

The petitioner points out that the suspect’s resident was converted to a sub-jail on verbal orders of Inspector General prisons without outlining any security threat.

It requests court to declare the move illegal and shift Anwar to the jail.



On May 14, the prime witness in Naqeebullah Mehsud ‘encounter’ case retracted his statement, accusing Sindh Police of coercing him into making a confession implicating Anwar.

During the proceedings, witness Shahzad Jahangir back-tracked from his statement and said he had no knowledge of the extra-judicial killing of Naqeeubullah. “The police coerced, subjected me to torture to give a statement against Anwar.”

Meanwhile, the counsel for Anwar filed an application requesting transfer to B-class jail from the current C-class in Karachi’s Central Jail. Pointing out that Anwar had not been convicted of a crime, the application sought permission for holding him in B-class jail.
