Protests in North Waziristan over targeted killings

Protesters demand more authority for Levies force to control situation

MIRAMSHAH: Protests in the Mir Ali town of North Waziristan Agency continued for a second day on Monday after the town witnessed targeted killings over the weekend.

At least two tribesmen were killed in separate targeted attacks on May 12. Protesters claimed that they have handed over all weapons and ammunition to security forces during Operation Zarb-e-Azb and not a single bullet is present in their houses.

"Steps leading towards disruption of peace will be discouraged," one protest organiser said. "We want an end to the environment of fear in the area."

The protesters assured the government representatives that they would not become part of any conspiracies and asked for the Levies force to be given authority in order to improve the security situation in the area.



One of the victims, son of former MNA Maulana Mohammad Dindar, was killed after gunmen opened fire on him late Saturday night in Mir Ali, according to the political administration.

In a separate incident, religious scholar Maulana Ishaq’s son Abdul Qayyum was also gunned down. The political administration said the victim was a teacher in a state-run school.

At least five people have been killed in targeted attacks in Mir Ali so far this month. North Waziristan Agency has seen a sharp increase in such incidents.
