The thefts have caused losses of millions of rupees for Wapda and have resulted in the closure of several water supply schemes in different areas, the incharge of the related department in Mansehra Naeem Shah confirmed the theft.
According to Shah, the police registered cases in all the incidents and also arrested some accused, but the question now is how to install new transformers in these areas with the current shortage of funds. Water supply schemes that cost billions have been closed for several months.
Sources said certain Wapda officials and contractors are involved in the theft of transformers, as the staff and contractors have their own financial benefit in mind relating to installation of new transformers. Locals threatened to block traffic on the Karakoram Highway if corrective action is not taken.
