A three-member bench, headed by Justice Nisar and comprising Justice Munib Akhtar and Justice Ijazul Ahsan, sought a report from country-wide bar councils regarding the matter.
The apex court also sent a notice to the Higher Education Commission (HEC), directing it to cooperate with the bar councils. During the hearing, the chief justice also remarked that a number of lawyers were practising law without an LLB degree.

A similar notice was taken in 2015 by the Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa Bar Council when it established a cell to verify law degrees of all registered legal practitioners across the province.
The cell was directed to approach universities within the country and abroad to verify law degrees held by members of the bar. It was decided that those lawyers with fake credentials will be implicated under criminal law and their licences will be cancelled.
