Police paraded a man and his son in "space suits" in India before taking them into custody for defrauding a businessman by pretending that they worked for Nasa.

The footage of the duo, adorned in silver space suits, being arrested by the police has since gone viral, BBC reported.

The pair allegedly convinced the victim to buy a copper plate for $213,156, claiming it had "special properties" to it, police said.

The defrauders had told the businessman that with his finances, they could sell the item to the space agency and get a profit.

Police told media the accused passed off the metal plate as a "rare piece of copper", which they said was "struck by thunderbolt" and therefore had the ability to pull rice.

They had also assured the man that the "Rice Puller" could be sold to Nasa for around $5.5bn.

Police further told reporters that the "rice puller" was "non-existent", saying the spacemen apparently covered the copper plate with "liquid magnet" and iron wires in order to try to fool the businessman.

The 'spacemen', however, met their fate when the businessman went to police complaining about them. The two men have not released any statement to the charges or made any comments on the public humiliation, which has also drawn reactions on social media.

Here are some of the reactions the 'spacemen' managed to stir on social media:
