Shakespeare Day celebrated at NUML

Prominent scholar Dr Tanveer Anjum attends event as chief guest

Shakespeare, arguably the greatest dramatist and playwright in English, is celebrated every year in April worldwide by students of English literature.

Like every year, National University of Modern Languages (NUML) celebrated this day on Thursday at the University’s Karachi campus.

Eminent scholar and poet Dr Tanveer Anjum, a Senior English Professor at Iqra University, was the honorable chief guest.

Students of graduate and undergraduate courses at the varsity presented tributes to the legendary writer by their amazing performances.

Among the items presented was “Seven Ages of Man” which depicted the lifecycle of the human in Shakespearean thought. This was followed by an act from Shakespeare’s drama “Taming of the Shrew”.

“Shakespeare is for all times and all spaces” said Dr. Tanveer Anjum in her address at the event. “Shakespeare does not belong to any particular nation, he has crossed those boundaries and we have appropriated him,” she said in praise of the great dramatist.

The programme also included a performance on an intense death sonnet “No Longer Mourn for Me When I am Dead” which sent shivers down the spines of the audience coming face-to-face with the image of death.

In his address, Regional Director NUML, Brig (retd) Shahid Saleem Lone was all praise for the event, saying all the acts and sonnets were very well performed. He expressed his gratitude to the entire team on their performance, showmanship, hard work and skills.

At the end, the honorable chief guest was presented with a shield and certificates were distributed among the participants.
