GUJRANWALA: A masked gunman escaped after attempting a robbery, injuring two people in the process, in Wazirabad on Tuesday.

The injured, 20-year-old Maryam and seven-year-old Kainat, were shifted to a nearby hospital for treatment.

Police reached the crime scene and recorded the statements of victims and witnesses. Police are investigating the matter and are on a hunt for the gunman.

A masked youth, armed with a pistol and a knife, knocked on Muhammed Rafiq’s door, reported Express News. When Rafiq’s daughter-in-law answered the door, with her newborn child in her arms, the youth immediately pressed the pistol against the baby’s neck. He threatened her, ordering her to remain quiet as he forced himself inside the home, where Rafiq’s wife and his 20-year-old daughter, Maryam, were also present.

Threatening to harm the child if the women did not remain quiet, the armed youth bound and gagged the women with their dupattas. However, fearing for their lives, the women started to shout in order to catch the attention of passersby.

Agitated by the noise, the young man opened fire on the women, injuring Maryam in the leg, before fleeing the scene of the crime.

A neighbour ran in pursuit of the robber, chasing him to Bazaar Chowk near Circular Road. However, the robber started firing at the man. In the process, one of the bullets hit a seven-year-old pedestrian, Kainat.

During this time, there was police vehicle full of law enforcement officers present. However, they did not intervene or assist in pursuing the gunman. Instead, they scattered after hearing shots ring out, reported Express News.
