54-bed children’s ER inaugurated at Lyari General Hospital

Free of charge emergency care to be provided to the residents of Lyari, says health secretary

KARACHI: A 54-bed children’s emergency room was inaugurated on Thursday at the Lyari General Hospital by the Sindh government in collaboration with the Childlife Foundation.

"The emergency room will provide free of charge emergency care for the residents of Lyari and its surrounding areas," said Health Secretary Fazullah Pechuho.

According to him, handing over the children’s ER to a private partner – the Childlife Foundation - is another milestone to serve the population of Lyari. The aim of the ER is to benefit patients with early and easy access to high-quality emergency care.

Vaccinations will also be carried out in the ER, which will help reduce the child mortality rate, said the health secretary. He went on to add that the typhoid vaccine is being included in the expanded immunisation programme. For this we have been seeking the help of the Aga Khan University Hospital, Pechuho said.

The health secretary also inaugurated a hepatitis clinic, AIDS clinic and Dow laboratory during the event.

The facility has employed qualified paediatricians and paramedical staff who are trained and skilled in emergency care and is fully modern, automated and equipped with cardiac monitors, defibrillators, resuscitation aids, phototherapy units and a well-stocked pharmacy to deliver its services to ailing children.

A Queue Management System, Automation to Save Lives and telemedicine system have also been introduced in the ER by the NGO to facilitate the entire process of saving lives. Besides this, the Childlife Foundation is already running the ER of the National Institute of Child Health, Civil Hospital, Karachi and that Korangi General Hospital 5 successfully, whereas the outpatient department of each hospital has recorded up to 600 patients per day.

Pechuho was the chief guest at the event while Childlife Foundation Chief Executive Officer Dr Ahson Rabbani, Clinical Affairs Director Dr Irfan Habib, Operations Director Dr Shahid Raza, Dr Huba and Communications General Manager Tabish Shahzad were also present on the occasion.
