SC bars K-P govt from extending job tenure of hospitals' board members

According to the petitioner, the BoG members were appointed allegedly on the basis of nepotism by CM Khattak

ISLAMABAD: The Supreme Court barred Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa (K-P) government on Thursday from extending the job tenure of the members of board of Governors of teaching hospitals in the province.

The three-judge bench headed by Chief Justice of Pakistan Mian Saqib Nisar was hearing a suo motu case regarding the possible extension of BoG members who had been appointed allegedly on the basis of nepotism by Chief Minister Pervez Khattak.

The application was moved by Young Doctors Association K-P president Dr Rizwan Kundi with the human rights cell of the apex court against the possible extension. Kundi had requested the SC to halt the extension and fresh recruitment till the next government is sworn in.



The bench also sought reply from the provincial government in this regard. The judges also stopped further recruitment of doctors and teachers through BoGs till a decision on the application.

On April 19, the CJP came down hard on the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) led K-P government for its ‘poor governance’ and failure to ensure ‘even basic human rights’.

The CM had told the bench that his priority from the day one has been health and education for which his government has tried to reform the existing system instead of erecting new structures.

The CJP noted that population of the city is growing but it is very unfortunate that no education and health infrastructure expansion has taken place. When Khattak said he has improved the system, the chief justice said he has not seen any improvement in the hospitals he visited.
