ISLAMABAD:

In a two-day meeting held to review capacity of jails and conditions of inmates, the National Judicial Policy Making Committee (NJPMC) expressed satisfaction over implementation of the National Judicial Policy, 2009. The meeting was held under chairmanship of Chief Justice of Pakistan and Chairman NJPMC, Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry.

The committee was informed that prior to implementation of Judicial Policy there were 63,000 prisoners in various jails of Punjab Province, which were thrice the capacities of the jails. However, after implementation of Judicial Policy and quick disposal of cases, the figure has been decreased to 52,967. Similarly in Sindh, the population of jail inmates has been substantially reduced from 20,000 to 13,464, along with considerable decrease in number of jail inmates in other provinces.
