Protest held against forcible eviction of retired professor in Quetta

For all my services rendered, the government has gifted me insult, says Shagufta Iqbal

QUETTA: The professors of educational institutions and civil society on Monday protested against the forcible eviction of retired professor Shagufta Iqbal and her family from government property by the police.

In a video that went viral on social media on Sunday, former Government Girls College Jinnah Town principal Shagufta Iqbal accused the police of throwing her belongings out of the government residence and harassing her and her children.



The college staff and her colleagues flanked by civil society members held a protest in front of the Quetta Press Club on Monday, demanding strict action against the police for mistreating and harassing a teacher.

“On the deputy commissioner’s order, the police have thrown out the belongings of retired professor Shagufta Iqbal without giving her respect and harassed her and her children,” the protesters said, demanding strict action against those responsible belonging to the education department and the police.



In her video, Shagufta claimed, “I wasn’t served any notice asking me to leave the government residence. I don’t have any other place in Quetta to reside in but for all my services rendered in the education field, the government has gifted me insult.”

The protesters carrying placards with ‘justice for Shagufta’ inscribed on them, chanted full-throated slogans against the police and demanded of the Balochistan Chief Minister Abdul Quddus Bizenjo to take notice of the matter.

Quetta CCPO Abdul Razzaq Cheema said, “The retired professor lost her case of further extension in her stay in the honourable court, and the district administration had asked the police for help in evacuating the residence.”
