PESHAWAR: The Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa Food Safety Authority on Monday banned the slaughter of immature or underage animals across the province. The ban was announced in a notification issued by the authority, adding that the ban would go into effect immediately. K-P Food Authority Director Technical Dr Abdul Sattar Shah explained that the ban had been imposed because butchers were frequently slaughtering underage animals and mixing their meat in mutton and mince. He said K-P food authority intended to preserve the future generation of animals, hence the slaughter of underage animals would damage this effort. Islamic jurisprudence also prohibits the slaughter of underage animals and prescribes that animals must have reached a certain age before they can be slaughtered.
