SAMBRIAL/ ISLAMABAD: Chief Justice of Pakistan Saqib Nisar on Wednesday took notice of the March murder of a journalist in Sumbrial.

During the hearing of a case on non-payment of salaries to journalists, Press Association of Supreme Court (PAS) President Tayyab Baloch drew the chief justice’s attention towards the murder of Zeeshan Butt.

Taking notice of the incident, Justice Nisar sought a report from Punjab IG Arif Nawaz Khan. Khan was given 24 hours to submit a detailed report on the killing.

Two Indian journalists killed in 24 hours

Butt was killed on March 27 while working on a story about the imposition of a tax on local shopkeepers by the Union Council. UC Chairman Imran Cheema was reportedly irked by Butt’s investigation. When the journalist realised the situation was grave, he reached out to police for help.

He then called the Sambrial DSP and told him that the UC chairman and his men had been threatening him. He then called District Chairperson Hina Arshad Warraich. He was allegedly killed by the UC chairman while on the phone.
