ISLAMABAD: The National Commission for Human Rights (NHCR) on Friday has taken suo motu notice of the rape and murder of a 20-year-old female student in Faisalabad.

In a letter written to the district police officer, The NHCR has sought a comprehensive report from the local police by April 3.

Court wants an update on reforms in investigations of rape cases

A few days ago, the woman’s body was found in Jaranwala tehsil of Faisalabad district in Punjab, four days after she was allegedly abducted. According to her family, she was returning home in a rickshaw on Sunday when four armed men abducted her.

She was enrolled in the MA in English programme at Faisalabad Government College University. The police refused to register a report when she went missing, according to her family members.

The family of the deceased girl demanded that Chief Justice of Pakistan Mian Saqib Nisar take notice of the incident and deliver justice to her family. Students and residents of Faisalabad took to the streets on Friday to protest over the alleged rape-murder.

Meanwhile, people from various walks of life have condemned the incident on social media, where the hashtag #JusticeForAbida has been among the top trends in Pakistan over the past two days.
