KARACHI: The temperature in Karachi is expected to reach 41° Celsius today (Thursday), according to the Pakistan Meteorological Department. The maximum temperature recorded in the city on Wednesday was 40.5°C.

However, officials have claimed that the high temperature will begin to subside from tomorrow (Friday) onwards as the temperature is expected to reach 39°C and will settle at 35°C until next Friday.

“The weather will be pleasant on the weekend, as humidity will rise and the direction of winds will be from the sea. However, the level of sunshine will be the same,” said Regional Meteorological Centre Director Shahid Abbas.

Met office predicts rain in Karachi in next 48 hours

He said that continental winds from the north west have resulted in hot weather in the province in March. According to him, the course of winds will change on Friday and the level of moisture in the air will also increase, giving relief to residents, especially those of Karachi. The wind will change its direction to south west, he said.

Abbas also said that the lack of winter rain resulted in the land heating up and hence the mercury has also risen above the usual temperature in March.

“The wheat harvesting season has also been initiated 10 to 15 days earlier than normal, which has left the land [soil] clear of vegetation and ultimately resulting in it heating up quicker,” he explained. He also said that the threshing of wheat has resulted in small particles in the air, making the atmosphere dusty.

Abbas remarked that this year’s summer will be hotter than expected and the temperature will rise another few degrees. “I don’t see any [chance of] rain in the month of April,” he predicted.

Chief of the met department in Karachi Abdul Rasheed said the temperature in rural Sindh will also remain hot. According to him, the temperature rose to 44.6° in Chhor Cantt on Wednesday.
