KARACHI: Stressing on the importance of conserving water, Karachi University’s Food Sciences and Technology Professor Abid Hussain underscored that water was the most important resource to sustain life.

“Our society wastes enormous amounts of water. We must devise ways to fight wastage of water,” he said while addressing a seminar making the World Water Day at Karachi University.

Dr Abid stressed that it’s crucial to inculcate early learning on how to save water.

“Children from the very start of their school life should learn about the importance of water,” he said, adding that water was considerably valued even in non-Muslim countries.

In Germany, Dr Abid claimed, every house has two meters to gauge the use of water. “The meters report any overuse of water for which citizens are required to pay additional taxes,” he said remarking that water was no less than a blessing and that a prudent water-saving system like that of Germany would also immensely benefit Pakistan.

In a similar vein,Principal at Institute of Oceanography Dr Nuzhat Khan warned that scarcity of water will engulf over 40 per cent of the people in the next 20 years.

“Water scarcity is a serious issue; pundits believe that increasing water scarcity might lead to a new world war,” Dr Khan said calling for an immediate development of a water management system.

She advocated the use of a water security system with proper check and balance saying that people in the country were prone to excessively wastewater in their daily lives.
