ISLAMABAD: Drug resistance of TB cases are on rise in Pakistan, said National Coordinator for AIDS, TB and Malaria Common Unit and Executive Director National Institute of Health (NIH) Dr Aamer Ikram.

Early diagnosis, appropriate and complete treatment is the most effective way to prevent the disease, Ikram said at a TB Awareness Walk at NIH, with the theme of “Wanted: Leaders for a TB-Free Pakistan”.

Government provides free diagnosis and treatment, but, he said, awareness programmes can minimise the risk of disease and stigma in the society.

NIH and National TB control Programme along with WHO had organised the walk in connection with World TB Day falling on March 24 to increase awareness regarding tuberculosis and to promote best practices among the general public to avoid spread of the disease.
