KARACHI:

Table-toppers Mumbai Indians were thrashed by Kings XI Punjab by a huge margin of 76 runs as the hosts improved their standing to move up to the ninth position after starting the match bottom-placed.

Chasing Punjab’s 163 for victory, Mumbai crashed to 87 all out in a dramatic collapse. Seven batsmen failed to reach double-figures with Kieron Pollard’s 17 proving to be the top score. Praveen Kumar started the rot early, providing the initial two breakthroughs before Bhargav Bhatt joined the party to bowl an excellent spell that yielded four wickets. Bipul Sharma, Ryan Harris and Shalabh Srivastava claimed one wicket each.

Earlier, a determined effort by Punjab’s top order laid the foundation for a competitive total, before Munaf Patel halted the hosts’ charge through a superb five-wicket haul. A 70-run second-wicket stand between captain Adam Gilchrist and compatriot Shaun Marsh was the highlight of the innings. Marsh top-scored with a quick fire 43, laced with five boundaries, while Gilchrist made 28.  Dinesh Karthikwas the other notable contributor with 31.
