One out of 10 university students raped in Britain

Groping, harassment, unwanted touching, coercion, sexual assault and rape cases reported in UK universities

Universities in the United Kingdom are becoming home to a rape epidemic as nearly one in 10 female students said they have been raped while responding to a study of sexual violence in higher education, according to The Guardian.

A report from Revolt Sexual Assault and The Student Room places the scale of sexual violence at UK universities shows that the experience is not pleasant for most of the students, showing a total of 62% graduates to experience sexual violence as per the definition used by Rape Crisis.

As much as 4,500 students from 153 different UK institutions were part of the study. Surprisingly, 8% of female respondents had been raped at university that is double the 4% of all women in England and Wales, the Office for National Statistics estimates.

It turns out that robing, harassment, unwanted touching, coercion, sexual assault, and rape is becoming normal in universities.

The scenario of universities show there is an epidemic of sexual violence at varsities in Britain.



There are low reports of victims reporting to police regarding the crime, Rape Crisis England and Wales says 15% of those who experience sexual violence report it to the police which is an issue for the universities.

Only 6% of respondents reported their experiences to their university and only 2% felt both able to report and satisfied with the reporting process.

The figures come after the University of Cambridge acknowledged a major problem with sexual misconduct as a result of a new unidentified reporting system that led to 173 complaints of ‘improper behaviour’ being made in nine months.

Many students feel incapable of continuing their studies. Damaging self-confidence, mental health and social life a quarter of students who experienced sexual violence had skipped lectures and tutorial. 16% dropped out or postponed their studies.
