GENEVA: A convoy carrying aid for thousands of trapped Syrians is "on its way" to the besieged rebel-held enclave of Eastern Ghouta, the Red Cross said Monday.

UN plans to deliver aid to Syria's Ghouta on Monday

"At last... A convoy ... carrying desperately-needed aid for tens of thousands is on its way to Eastern Ghouta, Syria," Robert Mardini, who heads the Middle East operations for the International Committee of the Red Cross, said in a tweet.

The convoy - a joint operation between the ICRC, the Syrian Red Crescent and the United Nations - consisted of 46 trucks, the ICRC communications chief in Syria, Pawel Krzysiek, said in a separate tweet.
