PESHAWAR: A teenage boy has been caught while allegedly trying to rape a seven-year-old girl in Malakandher village within the limits of Regi police station in Peshawar.

Local residents caught the 15-year-old boy while he was allegedly raping the child in a graveyard.

The suspect, who works as a domestic help at the house of a police constable, took the minor to the graveyard and attempted to molest her but she started crying, upon which a farmer arrived the scene.

The farmer caught the boy and handed him over to Regi police.

The police had registered an FIR and started investigation on the complaint of the victim’s father.

Talking to The Express Tribune, a child rights activist said that it was unfortunate that there was no effective child protection mechanism in place despite the fact that a Child Welfare and Protection Act was passed years ago.

Imran Takkar added that the offender himself was underage and he should be treated as juvenile offender instead of an adult. The teenage boy could not be locked up in jail, he added.

A sharp incline has been witnessed in reporting of incident of such nature ever since the brutal rape and murder of eight-year-old Zainab in Kasur shook the nation last month.

On Friday, a seven-year-old boy was found raped and killed at an under construction building in Karachi.

The victim, H*, had gone missing yesterday from an area that comes under the jurisdiction of New Town police station.

Later, his body was found from an under construction building near his house.
