KARACHI: A joint investigation team (JIT) has been constituted to investigate the killing of Intizar Ahmed, a 19-year-old who was shot dead in Defence Housing Authority on January 13.

"In pursuance of the home department [order], a JIT of FIR No 16/2018 registered at the Darakshan police station under Section 302 of the Pakistan Penal Code, regarding the killing of Intizar Ahmed, son of Ishtiaq Ahmed, has been constituted and fixed on January 26," reads a notification issued by Counter-Terrorism Department DIG Amir Farooqi.

CTD SSP Pervez Chandio has been appointed head of the JIT, while representatives of the Inter-Services Intelligence, Military Intelligence, Intelligence Bureau, Special Branch, Sindh Rangers and Karachi police will be members of the team.

DIG Farooqi was appointed as the new investigation officer by Sindh Inspector-General of Police Allah Dino Khawaja while transferring the case from District South Investigations SP Farooq Awan following the demand by the victim's family.

Intizar murder case: No evidence to implicate ACLC chief yet

Sources privy to the matter revealed that the decision to form a JIT was made after controversy arose in the case and the family accused former Anti-Car Lifting Cell (ACLC) chief SSP Muquddus Haider of being involved in the murder.

A senior police official privy to the investigation said that it was a complete failure of the ACLC police who were behind the killing of Intizar, adding that the footage of the crime scene as well as circumstantial evidence suggests that the ACLC officials and personnel were trying to abduct Intizar but killed him for resisting. He said the ACLC officials and personnel were not able to handle the matter professionally.

The officer added that SSP Haider would also be produced before the JIT to record his statement again as he has been included in the investigations while the victim's friends - Madiha Kayani, Laila, Salman and Imran - will also appear before the JIT. The team will also re-record the family’s statements.
