Customs confiscate three containers on mis-declaration

The importers had been involved in smuggling cellphones and tablets through mis-declaration

KARACHI: Foiling a smuggling bid, Pakistan Customs on Wednesday confiscated three containers on mis-declaration.

The containers were imported by three Lahore-based companies, which had been involved in smuggling cellphones and tablets worth 600 million rupees through mis-declaration.

Collector Appraisement, West, Shahnaz Maqbool told Roznama Express that last week an attempt to import mobile phones, tablets and batteries of cellphones under the garb of refrigerator parts, garments and dyes was foiled. The customs authorities had detained the consignment.



The same importers had imported the Wednesday’s consignment in line with their goods declaration to give an impression that their earlier consignment was mistakenly sent to Pakistan.

Maqbool said that the timely action of the customs officials had saved a possible revenue loss of about Rs100 millions.

He said that the profiles of the three importing companies are also suspicious.

To a question, Maqbool said that the elements against whom strict action had been taken in the recent months might be involved in the smuggling bid.

The collector added that currently a suspect was being interrogated in connection with the smuggling bid.

The gang leader has been identified and would soon be arrested, he maintained.
