Kumail Nanjiani to star in 'My Beautiful Laundrette' TV series

Kumail Nanjiani's co-star and Bollywood veteran Anupam Kher took to Twitter to congratulate the whole team

Veteran actor Anupam Kher has congratulated the entire cast and crew of his film The Big Sick, which bagged the Best Comedy film at the Critics Choice Award.

"Congratulations to the entire cast and crew of The Big Sick for winning the Best Comedy at the Critics Choice Awards. Jai Ho," Anupam tweeted on Friday.

The Big Sick is a romantic comedy directed by Michael Showalter. It stars Kumail Nanjiani, Zoe Kazan, Holly Hunter, Ray Romano and Adeel Akhtar apart from Anupam.

The film is loosely based on the real-life romance between Nanjiani and Gordon. It follows an interracial couple who must deal with cultural differences after Emily (played by Kazan in the film) becomes ill.



The film had its world premiere at the Sundance Film Festival in January 2017.

With his The Big Sick in full force, Nanjiani has now signed himself as an actor and writer for the TV adaptation of My Beautiful Laundrette, reported Variety.

The conversion of Laundrette will be based on the 1985 Oscar-nominated indie film. The story revolves around the story of a British-Pakistani man and his boyfriend who is a former gang leader. The film has been lauded for its portrayal of gay and immigrant communities, however no network has yet signed the deal for the TV series.


Kumail is currently co-writing the show. He will also be starring in the series - however, the character he is set to play, has not been revealed yet. Enjoying the success of this film, this will be Kumail's second project that shares thematic similarities with The Big Sick as both the projects tell stories of south Asian immigrants making their way in the world.
