KARACHI: A hearing of the case involving the search operation after two under-trial prisoners’ escape from Central Jail, Karachi was held on Saturday. Assistant superintendents Ghulam Murtaza and Abdur Rehman, including several other accused were present in court.

The court inquired about the absence of Advocate Amir Mansoob. A junior lawyer said that he was busy in some other case so the defendant’s lawyer requested the court to fix a new hearing date. However, the court said demand for new dates merely delays cases for which the courts are held responsible.

The defendant’s lawyer then said that the list of the recovered items submitted to the court was incomplete and also claimed to have not been provided with the required documents. The court ordered the investigation officer to share a copy of the case with the suspect’s lawyer, adjourning the hearing till January 16.

72 prisoners transferred from Karachi jail

On June 13, Sheikh Mumtaz alias Firoun and Ahmed Khan alias Munna fled the judicial complex inside central jail. A search operation was conducted during which anti-jamming devices, mobile phones and several other items were recovered.

Rehman said that he had sent a search letter to the Rangers Bhittai Wing Sector Commander Brigadier Shahid to which the commander responded by thanking the officers after conducting the search operation.  He said that he did not trust Counter Terrorism Department Additional IG Sanaullah Abbasi who was declared innocent as per an enquiry conducted by the crime branch.

Rehman also appealed to Sindh High Court Chief Justice Ahmed Ali Sheikh and IG Allah Dino Khawaja to transfer the investigation to a different officer so that a transparent investigation could be done. The suspect accused Abbasi of leveling allegations against him on personal grounds.
