HARARE:

All-rounder Elton Chigumbura has been vociferous about his wish to step down as Zimbabwe captain and is currently in talks with the country’s cricket board with the final decision on the issue expected in the coming week.

The all-rounder’s last outing as the captain, the 2011 World Cup in the subcontinent, was a huge disappointment for the national team as they failed to beat any of the Test playing teams.

Chigumbura’s own form was intensely criticised as he did not live up to expectations, failing both with the bat and the ball.

A report in Newsday suggested that Chigumbura has made up his mind regarding his decision to step down.

It quoted the all-rounder saying, “While some still think I should have stayed on others agreed with me that I needed to concentrate on my own game and let somebody else lead the team.

“I think I will be more useful in the team if I regain my form.”
