ISLAMABAD: National Accountability Bureau (NAB) Chairman Justice (retd) Javed Iqbal on Wednesday directed the verification of a complaint received against MNA Capt (retd) Muhammad Safdar, wherein he is accused of misappropriating public funds through fake development schemes in his constituency.

Earlier, NAB had received a complaint against Safdar, a son-in-law of former prime minister Nawaz Sharif, alleging that he had distributed development contracts worth Rs3 billion to his friends and family in violation of laid down criteria.

The complainant accused Safdar of misappropriating some Rs2 billion with the help of contractors by financing fake development schemes, which were only initiated and completed on paper.

The NAB chairman has forwarded that complaint to NAB Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa (K-P), directing it to verify the complaint. The K-P director general has been asked to verify the authenticity of the complaint by conducting investigations into the matter.

“The verification of complaints should be conducted in a transparent manner..and the responsible [parties] must be taken to task in case public money has been embezzled,” the NAB chairman directed.
