Lawbreakers: Over 650,000 traffic tickets issued

            The Rawalpindi City Traffic Police (CTP) issued 652,761 tickets during 2017, imposing fines worth Rs240million for various traffic violators during the year. According to Chief Traffic Officer (CTO) Yousaf Ali Shahid, the traffic police impounded 4,034 vehicles and 8,606 motorbikes in its efforts to smoothen the flow of traffic on city roads. As many as 13,561 tinted glass vehicles were ticketed and the tints were removed on the spot. Drivers of 9,650 vehicles were ticketed for parking violations. Moreover, 16,922 underage drivers, 20,447 drivers who were using mobile phones while driving, 15,900 drivers who did not have driving licenses were issued tickets. Action was also taken against 5,242 drivers for overspeeding. As many as 485 FIRs were also registered against drivers for severe violation of traffic rules, he added. A traffic awareness campaign was also run during the year where citizens were educated regarding traffic rules and road safety.
