PFA bans sale of chooran

LAHORE: The scientific panel of Punjab Authority Food (PFA) imposed a ban on preparation and sale of all kinds of chooran (a flavoured, chemically treated edible salt) on Friday. The scientific panel took this decision after a research found some harmful effects of chooran on human health. PFA Director General Noorul Amin Mengal said that the non-food grade tartaric acid is found in the chooran which can cause ulcer and other stomach diseases.

He added that it was mostly eaten by children who were most affected by the diseases caused by it. The ban has been imposed as per PFA Act 2011 to eliminate health-related risk. Mengal warned people linked with this business, including preparation and selling, to stop making and selling of the product. He also ordered them to abandon their businesses, otherwise, strict action would be taken against them.
