Law enforcement agencies claimed on Tuesday to have arrested at least eight suspects allegedly involved in extortion and street crime.

Three suspects allegedly involved in collecting extortion were identified as Khalid alias Ustad, Daniyal alias Bona and Riaz Ahmed alias Raju. They were arrested during a raid conducted by a special team constituted to inquire into a call demanding extortion from a local restaurant owner in the Garden area.

The arrests were disclosed during a press conference by SSP Adeel Chandio. According to the officer, the arrested suspects were involved in the case pertaining to extortion registered at the Garden police station. SSP Chandio claimed that the suspects had demanded Rs2 million extortion money from a restaurant owner, Shezi. The officer added that after demanding extortion, the suspects also attacked the complainant's restaurant and resorted to firing at the place.

A special team was formed to investigate the case, SSP Chandio said, adding that within a short period, the police traced and arrested the suspects who belonged to Lyari. The police also claimed to have recovered arms and ammunition from their possession.

Separately, Sharae Faisal police claimed to have busted a gang of street criminals. The suspects were identified as Noman, Yamin, Shakir, Bilal and Saleh. Their arrests were disclosed during a press conference held by ASP Hamza Aman.

According to ASP Aman, the gang comprised at least 30 persons and eight cases were registered against it. The suspects were involved in the theft of motorcycles, the ASP said.
